Avoiding Colds and Flu Naturally

cold-flu-bannerThis year it is of utmost importance that we pay attention to strengthening our immune systems naturally. Using certain herbs, foods, supplements and homeopathic remedies can help you avoid catching a cold or flu and build your immune system. If you do catch a virus, they can help relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration and severity of the illness.

What most people don’t realize is how much your daily diet has an impact on the strength of your immune system. If you or your child are eating sweets daily, processed foods, junk food, drinking soda or other sweetened beverages regularly, you are weakening your immunity and will be more likely to catch virus’s. One teaspoon of sugar (soda has about 9-11 tbsp.) can weaken your immune system for 4 hours. I believe that this is why so many people are now having an extreme difficulty fighting illnesses. (Besides repeated antibiotic use)

Good Nutrition

Try eating more vegetables, at least 4-5 servings a day! Along with eggs for breakfast, how about a few pieces of steamed asparagus, some spinach, squash or a few tomato slices. Have a salad with lunch, and at least two vegetables with dinner. Fresh fruit can also bolster vitamin C and help build resistance.
Eat berries daily! Especially frozen – freezing berries breaks the cell wall and releases more color pigments containing the beneficial bioflavanoids. Avoid all white flour (eat only WHOLE grains), baked goods, sugary cereals, cookies, cakes, candy, and sweets. You’ll feel so much stronger than you realize!

Good Natural Vitamins a MUST!

It is very important to take a good quality, plant-based not synthetic, multi-vitamin/ mineral supplement daily which supplies you with vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, proanthocyanadines, bioflavanoids, green foods, enzymes and more.
Taking 2000-4000 mg. of Vitamin C every day will help you fight infections. Eating garlic regularly or taking odorless garlic capsules helps fight viral, bacterial, and yeast infections. Bee propolis is known as Russian penicillin and is often found in natural vitamin supplements. It is collected by bees to protect the hives from infection.

Super Antioxidants

I HIGHLY recommend using Super Antioxidants daily! Not only because they help reduce the signs of aging, along with aches and pains, but they can greatly increase your immune system, being 20 – 50 times more potent than Vitamin C and E!

Using Echinacea

(purple coneflower) herbal extract regularly can help you avoid or reduce the severity and duration of viral illnesses. 40 drops for an adult taken 4-6 times a day at the first sign of a cold can help you build up your immune system and you might just avoid it altogether. Olive Leaf extract can be used to support our lungs when fighting upper respiratory infections, sinus, strep and throat infections! Those with autoimmune diseases should consider using Astragalus instead of Echinacea to strengthen the spleen and immune system. It is a safe, long term immune system tonic.

Oil of Oregano

My favorite is a high-quality, full-strength Oil of Oregano. It is a very powerful agent and when used will assist the body in its fight against bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections. I recommend keeping some on hand! It’s an excellent general tonic and immune stimulant. You can take one or two capsules a day, or place one or two drops of the oil under the tongue to go immediately into the blood and lymph system. 4-5 drops can also be placed in juice and taken several times a day. This very well could be your best offense when it comes to the flu!

Therapeutic value of Colloidal Silver

Also consider using Colloidal Silver for excellent anti-viral protection! It works great in helping to reduce the symptoms of colds and flu. The body has an innate ability to rejuvenate and restore itself to optimum health. When taken daily, Colloidal Silver acts as an optimal immune system supporter by helping the body fight invaders. Medical tests indicate no known adverse effects from the use of properly prepared Colloidal Silver, and there has never been a recorded case of drug interaction with any other medication.  The body does not develop a tolerance to Colloidal Silver and no allergic reaction has ever been recorded.

How Colloidal Silver Works

The presence of Colloidal Silver near an invader disables its oxygen-metabolism enzyme, its chemical lung, so to say. Within a few minutes, the invader suffocates and dies, and is cleared out of our bodies by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, Colloidal Silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different than those enzymes of primitive single-celled life. Thus, Colloidal Silver is absolutely safe for humans, reptiles, plants and all multi-celled living matter.

Gut Health

Not to be underestimated is the value of maintaining good colon health. The Chinese have long equated respiratory problems with poor bowel function. If waste product is not beingremoved in a timely fashion then toxins build up in the body, and particularly the respiratory system. Be sure to take herbs which perform a good bowel detox, as well as keep the intestines in fighting shape with friendly bacteria, such as acidophilus or bifidophilus. Enzymes are a must. Take a broad spectrum enzyme combination, both with meals and between meals.

Regular daily exercise and fresh air will also keep your lymph moving and your immune system strong. Try rebounding (jumping on a mini-trampoline) everyday, even if it’s just 2-5 minutes, several times a day.  Be sure to wear a hat when out in the cold. Getting plenty of sleep and daily relaxation to reduce stress will also help. Keeping your self strong and healthy protects you from the ills that may ail you.

Essential Oil Storage

essential-oil-banner-600The importance of storing your essential oils in a proper manner can be gleaned from the fact that women in the 19th century would ask their jewelers to design special bottles to hold their perfumes and essential oils. Luxury apart, storing essential oils in specially designed bottles helped keep the therapeutic and aromatic properties of the essential oils intact.

It is common knowledge that most of the essential oils become contaminated or their effect gets weakened with time if they are not stored properly. Citrus oils are the most susceptible to early breakdown. They oxidize and begin to lose the aroma and therapeutic properties. The citrus oil becomes cloudy and a sweet fragrance is emitted. This signals towards the deterioration of the essential oil.

Same does not apply to oils such as frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, and myrrh. They can be stored for a longer time. In fact, they improve with time. In the older times, Egyptians used to embalm their dead with the essential oils of cedar wood, cinnamon etc. When one such tomb was opened in the early 20th century, traces of the oil were clearly visible.

Will you not like to keep your treasured essential oils in the same manner? Lifetime of the essential oil ranges from 6 months to several years. Through a proper storage, one can increase the shelf life of an essential oil. The following section provides insight into storing essentials oils.

Dark amber, cobalt blue, or violet glass bottles are the best when it comes to storing essential oils. Sunlight can be very harmful for the essential oils. Ultraviolet rays, which are a part of the sunlight, weaken the essential oil. This explains the reason why it is not advisable to store essential oils in clear glass bottles. Sunlight easily passes through the clear glass bottle, thus producing reaction in the essential oil, and no longer rendering it effective.

Plastic bottles too must not be used as the plastic dissolves with the essential oil and thus is contaminated. One can use aluminum bottles to store the essential oil, but the inner surface of the container must be lined.

Your essential oils need to be kept away from sunlight as far as possible. High temperature can be harmful to the oil. Therefore, the place where the essential oil is stored must not be near any heater vent or any such heat-emitting gadget. Keeping the oil in a refrigerator can help increase its shelf life. Nevertheless, freezing is not acceptable. When cooled at very low temperatures, some essential oils will cloud. It regains its original state when brought to room temperature. Certain citrus oils continue to be cloudy even when brought to room temperature. However, this does not affect their therapeutic properties.

We tend to contaminate the essential oil in the process of using them. The following checklist will be helpful in preventing contamination:

  • Never touch the top of the orifice reducer or the inside of the cap.
  • Always use separate pipettes for separate oil.
  •  The pipettes must not be carriers of oxygen. When one uses the pipette for taking out the oil, a few drops of it remain in the pipette. This becomes contaminated when it comes in contact with oxygen outside. When the same pipette is used again, it contaminates the whole bottle.
  • The cap of the bottle containing essential oils must not be kept open for long. Since they are volatile, they will evaporate.
  • The cap of the bottle containing essential oil must be selected carefully. Rubber droppers have a tendency to turn into gum when they come in contact with the concentrated essential oil.

Keeping these points in mind, one can surely increase the shelf life of the essential oils. This might require a few extra efforts and might become expensive in some cases, but your treasured essential oils truly deserve this.

Herbal Remedies: Stress

stress-picIf we could look beyond the symptoms of many physical ailments to the core of what is really wrong…we would most likely find…stress!  Even when it is not the cause, stress usually aggravates the condition.

Stress has such a powerful effect because of what it does to the body.  When we sense danger, our body is flooded with adrenaline and other hormones, and our nervous system reactions are heightened:

Our heart pumps faster

Blood rushes to our face

Eyes dilate

Muscles are primed to…MOVE!

Our body even begins to sweat as a means of keeping us cool during the crisis.

Beyond “stressing out”!

While we were born with reflexes that are more for hunting and being warriors…that just isn’t appropriate anymore in this day and age.  Instead, in these modern times our adrenal alarm goes off for very different reasons:

Traffic Jams

Boss or co-worker issues

Computer crashes

Family fights

Washing machine dies

Responsible for pumping out adrenaline in response to stress, our adrenal glands are controlled by our nervous system and they respond quickly to our emotions.  After awhile of constant bombardment of “stressors”,  our adrenals become totally exhausted.  The consequences of this is staggering to think about…almost every system in our body is either directly or in-directly influenced by the adrenal glands.  When our adrenals are exhausted our body just does not respond to life in the same “normal” way.

We get sluggish, tired all the time, we may develop anemia and our blood sugar levels & blood pressure may dip, which will make us feel even more exhausted.  Other symptoms include:

Weight loss

Digestive issues

Skin discoloration

Highly over-emotional

And if we continue on in this stress-induced lifestyle we could be looking at other physical issues such as:

Heart disease

Mental confusion

Caffeine is not the answer!

Herbs can help!

This versatile herb calms people who are agitated, but can also stimulate those who are fatigued.

Valerian also helps relax the body.

How effective is it?

Valerian is one of the few herbal supplements that meet the rigorous U.S. standards, leading to its being given a rating of 1 on a scale of 1 to 5. This means that years of extensive, valid research indicate that valerian is very effective when used as intended. Valerian helps calm the mind and relax the body.

What does Ginseng do?

Ginseng and Siberian Ginseng can help you handle stress more effectively by sedating or stimulating your central nervous system according to what your body needs. Ginseng in affect is a calming herb…giving you balance and replenishing your energy.

Ginseng also increases your brain’s utilization of amino acids, which is important because when you are under stress, your body uses more protein than usual and proteins are comprised of amino acids.

Aromatherapy and Back Pain

Today many people suffer from lower back pain. This may be a result of poor posture, standing too long at work, or from a previous injury. For those who deal with back pain, they know that the pain can become unbearable. Back pain can cause great discomfort and can hinder the enjoyment from a person’s life. Living with chronic pain can take its toll on the emotions as well, and can lead to mood swings and a negative outlook of life. The best remedy is to avoid injuring the back to begin with.

Oh my aching back!

One of the best ways to prevent back pain is to watch your weight. Being overweight can lead to chronic back pain. When the abdomen becomes overstretched, the back muscles will be used to counteract the effect of slack abdomen muscles. By keeping the abdomen toned and not becoming overweight you can save your back a lot of injury in the future.

Pregnancy is another cause of back pain. When a woman is pregnant, the growing baby will stretch out the abdomen and the back will feel the effects. You may even have a mental image of a pregnant woman standing with her hands held on her lower back. Some women even have greater amounts of back pain during pregnancy when the baby sits on the Sciatic nerve. This may result in excruciating and debilitating back pain. Thankfully, this type of back pain is temporary and will subside once the baby is born.

It is important that you prevent back injury at the workplace as well as at home. This may mean that you wear a back brace at work when picking up heavy objects. Also, you should always bend at your knees when picking something up. Many people make the mistake of bending at the waist to pick up heavy objects and this can result in strained back muscles, or back injury.

If your lifting-use caution and a brace if needed!

If you are suffering from back pain then you should schedule an appointment with your chiropractor or family physician. It is important that you nurture your spine, and if you suspect an injury do not put it off. You may need to take a course of prescribed treatment so scheduling an appointment is very important.

Aromatherapy also offers some great benefits to easing back pain. Along with Aromatherapy, you can also do some gentle Yoga stretching exercises. Always check with your chiropractor or doctor before starting any exercise, but Yoga is wonderful for the spine and most likely will be recommended by your doctor.

Several Essential Oils actually help muscle pain…including Rosemary!

You can take hot oil baths to relieve the pain as well as have hot oil massages on your back. There are many natural essential oils that will help relieve the pain.

 Aromatic pain-relieving bath

10 drops of Eucalyptus

10 drops of Peppermint

*Add to your bath

*Soak in the hot bath for at least 20 minutes to achieve the full therapeutic benefits

Massage Oil

It is prepared by mixing the following oils together:

3 drops Rosemary oil
1 drop Eucalyptus oil
2 drops Peppermint oil
2 drops Chamomile oil
1 drop Cardamom oil
10 ml Evening primrose oil

A hot compress does increase blood flow to a particular area of the body. A compress is when a cloth or towel is soaked in cold or hot water and applied directly to the skin.

Recommended Essential Oils:

Celery Seed

Recommend dilution:

In 1 quart of water, place five to 10 drops of essential oils OR one to three drops of essential oils directly onto the compress.

To make a compress:

Fill sink or large bowl with 1 quart of hot or cold water. Place five to 10 drops of  essential oils. Place a clean cotton cloth in the water and swish around. Wring out cloth to the desired moisture and place on the treated area. You can also add at this time one to three drops of the above essential oils directly to the compress, then apply the compress to the localized treatment area.

A hot compress should be left on until it has cooled to body temperature, then repeat application for soaking and reapply. Repeat three to four times. A cold compress can be refreshed more often, after several minutes.

The Miracle of Peppermint Oil: 20 Practical Uses for Survival

20-Uses-Peppermint-Essential-OilPeppermint essential oil is so useful that is it comes as no surprise that even folks that are not well versed in the use of essential oils will have a bottle in their first aid kit. In my own case, peppermint oil was added to my collection in the 80s when I started suffering debilitating migraine headaches.  Thankfully, the headaches are gone but peppermint essential oil remains a core component in my medicine cabinet.

There are many ways to use peppermint essential oil: topically either neat or mixed with a carrier oil, internally as a tea or as an addition to water, or aromatically in a diffuser or in a steaming bowl of water. Peppermint oil may also be ingested provided it is what is called “therapeutic grade”.  You will know this by the supplement information on the label.

First and foremost, peppermint is a prolific garden plant that is so profuse that in my area. it must be confined to pots or planters lest it take over the entire garden.  Trust me on this; left unchecked it is like a weed.  There is archaeological evidence that peppermint was used by the ancients for medicinal use.  Most likely, the plant leaves were ingested in food as well as in teas, much as they are used today.  Whether the ancients had their own version of the Mojito is up for grabs but chances are they did!

Peppermint and peppermint essential oil have many health-promoting properties.  Peppermint is a great digestive, helps the respiratory system, promotes good circulation, and is an excellent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.  It also smells good and makes a superb air and breath freshener.  According to the National Institutes of Health, peppermint oil reduces spasms in the digestive tract. When applied to the skin, it creates surface warmth, which in turn relieves pain beneath the skin.

Of the hundreds of potential uses for peppermint oil, I present 20 that are the most practical and most useful in a survival situation.  Read more here…
